This small study catches a pad in decline. Against dark water a leaf curls and rolls in on itself, its green giving way to tawny golds and ochres as it dries and furls into a tight spindle shape.

Fresher green leaves press in at the corners, their edges rimmed in pale reflected light, so that youth and decay share the same small stage. The painting finds real beauty in the browning tissue, a quiet note on the pond's turning seasons.
