The Wooden Stool

A four-legged wooden stool stands alone against pale blue-washed paper, its square seat tilted towards the viewer to show the grain and turned edges. Warm browns and ochres model the timber, with darker washes pooling where the legs brace and join.

A soft blue-grey shadow falls to the left, fixing the stool in light. The painter builds the form in transparent layers, letting the paper glow through the lighter planes, and finds in a plain studio prop an unhurried, carefully observed subject.
