Still Life with Fruit Bowl, Copper Coffee Pot and Mantel Clock

Against a near-black ground, a tall bouquet of lilies, chrysanthemums and asters rises above a scalloped Imari bowl heaped with grapes, a peach and an orange. The painter marshals a full cast of surfaces: a faceted crystal vase, a burnished copper coffee pot, a blue-and-white cup on its saucer, and an antique mantel clock sheltered under a glass dome.

Light falls from the left and is answered everywhere, in the copper's warm sheen, the cut glass, and the lace spilling over the polished wooden edge. A fallen pear, a split plum and scattered petals close the composition with studied informality.
