Hurricane Lantern in Red

A hurricane lantern is set against a flat field of intense red, its tall wire loop drawn as a bare outline that rises almost to the top of the sheet. The body of the lamp is worked in deep, transparent reds and blacks, the glass globe left pale so that the crossed wicks and highlights show through.
The painter reduces the subject to a near-monochrome exercise, letting the single hot colour flood the paper while the dark metal reads as silhouette and reflection. The effect is bold and graphic, quite unlike the cooler oil lantern studies.
