A young child sits square to us in a plain wooden chair, hands resting on the knees and bare feet planted on the floor. The head is the finished passage, the dark fringe and the wide, watchful eyes carefully shaded.
Below the shoulders the figure and the chair are described in open outline, the loose T-shirt and the chair rails set down as clean linear structure. It is a patient observational study, more concerned with pose and proportion than with tonal finish.
